Hostname
- Mneumonic
- Provide little information about the location within the Internet of the host
- Consist of variable-length alphanumeric characters - difficult to process by routers

IP address
- Consists of four bytes
- Each period separates one byte
- Each byte expressed in decimal notation from 0 to 255
- Moving from left to right gives increasing detail about the location
