Types of Internet host identifiers

Hostname

  • Mneumonic
  • Provide little information about the location within the Internet of the host
  • Consist of variable-length alphanumeric characters - difficult to process by routers
  • Examples
    • cnn.com
    • mitchell.cc.nc.us
    • irs.gov

IP address

  • Consists of four bytes
  • Each period separates one byte
  • Each byte expressed in decimal notation from 0 to 255
  • Moving from left to right gives increasing detail about the location
  • Example
    • 121.7.106.83
